I sit in the sanctuary of The Downtown Church and I find myself at peace. For a few moments in what has been a challenging week, I just sit and take in the exceptional beauty of this place at Christmas time. We have a gorgeous new tree and wonderful decorations. Soon the poinsettias will arrive. The wreaths are hung, the bows are tied, the advent wreath in place.
Then I hear a whirr, the sound of a motor moving under the pews. It is Wall-E, our newest employee and winner of employee of the month three times in a row! Wall-E is a robot vacuum just doing his job, reaching the out of the way places. When he is full or when his battery is low, he heads back to the docking station. Brian tracks his work on his phone, and can even program him for specific areas at specific times. Maybe this is why he keeps winning the award?
It may be a stretch for you, but this is an example of who we are at The Downtown Church. We are people who value the traditions of the past, the people and the history of those who have worshipped and served God here for generations. And we are a church willing to open our hearts and minds to what is new. We embrace new Ideas, thoughts, songs, liturgy, and of greater importance than a robot, real human beings.
We are blending it all together and by the power of the Holy Spirit, creating this wonderful experience in a sanctuary where the love of God is being revealed in Jesus Christ.
I eagerly await Christmas Eve with you here at 7pm. Come early! Our beautiful organ has been tuned and will ring out Christmas songs of old starting at 6:30pm. Our young children will dress up in costumes and be in a no-rehearsal pageant of the Christmas story. We will hear the words of Luke 2 and celebrate Holy Communion. Our band will play a new song to express our hope. We will light the Christ Candle and sing Silent Night as we pass the light. And Wall-E will sit quietly in his docking station and listen to it all.
Join us. We have a place for you. Merry Christmas!
