I am learning a lot about myself in these extraordinary times. I imagine you are too. In less than a month, we’ve gone from debating having worship at the church, to putting together online worship. We’ll even have an online Good Friday experience with 16 voices from our church reading the Passion Story. It has been a challenge for me, a Baby Boomer, who has not kept up with technology.
I’m wired to be an in person pastor. I do my best work caring for people. I did not go to seminary because I was seeking theological knowledge. I went because it was where I was called to go in order to serve God in a new way. I love building relationships. I find great joy in walking with others to find their gifts in serving God and then getting out of the way. When someone is going through the most difficult time in their life, I will be at the hospital bedside, at the funeral home, almost anywhere, with them.
With them. That is my call. Learning how to look at a camera and share what is in my heart is not something I would choose to do. I crave to be with you. All of you.
And so...I am learning. I am learning that this is not about my preference, it is about adjusting and changing as the times demand. I am learning how beautifully the people of The Downtown Church are reaching out to one another in care and concern. I am learning that there are many incredibly talented people who can take my attempts at remote worship and weave together something far beyond my imagination. I am incredibly grateful.
Join us online for Good Friday worship. Then get ready for Sunday - Easter is coming! I will be with you through technology, for now.
With love and the hope of the resurrection,
