In the middle of worship, right before the offering is presented to God, I receive it from someone and take it to the altar. One of my favorite things each week is seeing who brings it forward. I never know who it’s going to be!
This past Sunday, as I stood waiting and singing the Doxology, down the aisle came my two three-year-old grandchildren, Kate and Calvin. They were carefully walking, each with an offering plate clenched in their little hands.
Leading them was a wonderful person, Allison, who kept checking behind her to make sure these precious children were following. If you were there, you saw and heard me, as I struggled to form words for the overwhelming gratitude and praise I felt for the Holy Spirit of God filling our church.
Later that day, we posted a video on facebook of Allison as she was teaching Kate and Calvin how to pass the plates. Pew by pew she taught them how to move from one row to the next. Kate and Calvin were learning that worship is something in which they participate and the smiles showed them it is fun. At three years old, they have a place here. This was our church in action. This was our vision come to life. The Downtown Church meets in the middle of rich & poor, young & old, believers & nonbelievers. A place where Christ and the community intersect.
As 2020, begins I look forward to the many ways we will live into our vision together. Keep your eyes and ears open to what God will do in and through us. I can’t wait!
Happy New Year and see you tomorrow,
