The Downtown Church

The News from the Pews - AUG 29

Greetings from The Downtown Church! This is a bi-weekly email with information about events, updates, and other fun things from the leadership of the church.

As I write this, I can hear laughter and conversation from some of the wonderful volunteers creating new space for ministry at The Downtown Church. Someone else is cleaning windows while another person is restocking the pews and doing dishes. Tuesday evening our Board met for the third time and once again laughter could be heard. We talked about important issues, but we also let the joy we feel at The Downtown Church permeate our time together. Every Sunday the gathering area and the Sanctuary are places of laughter as we come together.

I need laughter in my life. Real laughter that comes from recognizing our flawed humanity without sarcasm and cynicism. Belly laughs when someone tells the worst pun of the year. And in the laughter, no one is the butt of the joke, no one is being demeaned, it‘s just fun. (From Brian: Are there any good reasons to move to Switzerland? The flag is a big plus) Children’s giggles, loud snorts, proper tee-hees. All of it.

I don’t stick my head in the sand. I watch the news and I read about the issues of the day. I spend a great deal of time listening and learning the difficult stories and challenges people are facing. I will step outside and experience life with all its complexities and complications just as you will. Some of it will break my heart and I will cry.

Yet, when people ask, “How is it going at The Downtown Church?” I often respond, “We are laughing together.”

May it always be so.

See you Sunday,

Each August, we ask the congregation to take one step deeper into the life of the church. Whether that's helping with kids, leading a Bible study, or just helping clean up. Last Sunday, there were inserts in the bulletin with areas where we need help. You can fill one out this Sunday or you can go to this link and fill out the same form online. The choice is yours!

It's time for another (hopefully dry) First Friday Art Walk Party. On Friday, Septembr 6, we'll welcome the Springfield Community Jazz Ensemble for smooth tunes, Christina Pike will teach a kids sculpture session, and we'll have popcorn and lemonade for snacks. Bring your friends and kick-off the weekend with a party!
We are excited to start a NEW multi-generational Sunday morning group. Heather Blair is going to lead the first 5 weeks of this study called The Head and the Heart: dipping our whole selves into the experience of the Psalms. We’ll examine a different Psalm each week - engaging our minds in study, our hearts in empathy, and our lives in kindred experiences.
