As I write this, I can hear laughter and conversation from some of the wonderful volunteers creating new space for ministry at The Downtown Church. Someone else is cleaning windows while another person is restocking the pews and doing dishes. Tuesday evening our Board met for the third time and once again laughter could be heard. We talked about important issues, but we also let the joy we feel at The Downtown Church permeate our time together. Every Sunday the gathering area and the Sanctuary are places of laughter as we come together.
I need laughter in my life. Real laughter that comes from recognizing our flawed humanity without sarcasm and cynicism. Belly laughs when someone tells the worst pun of the year. And in the laughter, no one is the butt of the joke, no one is being demeaned, it‘s just fun. (From Brian: Are there any good reasons to move to Switzerland? The flag is a big plus) Children’s giggles, loud snorts, proper tee-hees. All of it.
I don’t stick my head in the sand. I watch the news and I read about the issues of the day. I spend a great deal of time listening and learning the difficult stories and challenges people are facing. I will step outside and experience life with all its complexities and complications just as you will. Some of it will break my heart and I will cry.
Yet, when people ask, “How is it going at The Downtown Church?” I often respond, “We are laughing together.”
May it always be so.
See you Sunday,
