Happy Thanksgiving! As you read this, I will be visiting family in Georgia and sharing time with my mom and dad. Some of you will have spent this day around tables and even perhaps relegated to the “kids" table in the kitchen. Some of you will be guests at another’s table or have opened your table to others. Some of you will be on your third meal as you paced your food consumption at a variety of relatives and the elastic pants have come in handy as you squeeze into yet another table.
But I know you. Some will be alone, and no one seems to notice. Some will be grieving the loss of a loved one and finding an appetite is difficult. Some will be newly separated and wondering where the friends have gone. Some will be binge watching Netflix and just hoping the day passes quickly.
And I know God. I know God sees you wherever you are and knows you by name. I know God has a plan and a purpose for your life - to love God and love neighbor. I know you are valuable. So valuable Jesus entered humanity to restore your life and your hope. I know the Holy Spirit is real and present among us, weaving our lives together with all of humanity.
And I know The Downtown Church. It is a place where Christ and the community intersect. It is a place where our common denominator is the love of God in Jesus Christ. It is a place where, however your table looked or felt today, you have a place at the table of Christ this Sunday. For this, above all, I am grateful.
