The Downtown Church

The News from the Pews - OCT 17Β πŸƒπŸ‚πŸπŸˆπŸŽƒ

Greetings from The Downtown Church! This is a bi-weekly email with information about events, updates, and other fun things from the leadership of the church.

Yesterday I spent some time with Shep & Nancy Woolford at Mercy Hospital where Nancy is dealing with some heart issues. I hope by the time you read this, she is home recovering. For those who haven’t had the privilege of knowing the Woolfords, I can let you know that 30 minutes with them is as powerful as any sermon or message I have ever heard.

Shep is almost 92, Nancy 88. They have been part of what we call The Downtown Church (forever St. Paul to them) for 64 years. They have prayed and financially supported generations of people who have passed through the doors of this church. They keep their membership vows as sacred - prayers, presence, gifts, service, and testimony.

They are sold out followers of Jesus Christ. I can see it in their eyes as each Sunday they look lovingly on the new people the Holy Spirit brings each week. I can hear it in their laughter as they watch our Downtown Kids run over one another on their way to hear a children’s message. I can feel it in their presence as they always ask about me, my family, my needs, my hopes and dreams.

Nancy and Shep preach with their lives. They speak better than I ever could about the incredible joy of knowing Jesus Christ. And as they reach the winter of their days, they simply and beautifully state they have had it all: loving friends and family, children they are proud of, and a church that has given them purpose.

May we all be deserving of such an incredible legacy of love.

See you Sunday,

We're excited to celebrate in multiple ways on Sunday, OCT 27. We have bluegrass music planned, we'll be consecrating our Estimate of Giving Cards in worship, blessing the new nursery upstairs with gifts, and breaking bread together after worship. We'll supply the fried chicken, you bring the assigned dish for your age. We can't wait to celebrate the things God has done and has yet to do! RSVP this Sunday in the bulletin or just email us back and let us know how many will be there.

Our Sunday morning group begins a new path this Sunday at 9am in the Fellowship Hall. For five weeks, Kevin Pybas will guide us through Galatians, a short, but theologically rich letter. The Law, the Spirit, freedom, faith, community - we’ll be covering it all! Come once or come for all five sessions - everyone is welcome. No sign ups or homework required!

Join Dr. Jim Meyer, MSU professor of Human Development and Family Studies, for a 3-week workshop designed to help deal with the stress and anxiety of the holidays in healthy ways. This FREE event will have a light meal and childcare available. The workshop will be on Sundays, NOV 3, 10, and 17, from 4:30-6:30pm.
