Greetings from The Downtown Church! This is a bi-weekly email with information about events, updates, and other fun things from the leadership of the church.

I just finished a phone call with a person from the Missouri Annual Conference staff. She was seeking to know how The Downtown Church was engaged in working in the areas of racial and social justice and how the conference might provide resources to enhance our work. She was given our congregation’s name as a place that was actively participating in justice ministries. How are we going about creating a more just world?

I answered by describing the ways The Downtown Church is living into its vision to be a place where Christ and the community intersect; sometimes in our building and sometimes in the community. In the church, we are opening our doors to organizations that are on the frontlines of impacting poverty, addictions, child abuse and domestic violence. We are stepping out of the building on First Fridays to get to know our neighbors and extending hospitality to all who might pass by. In the community, we are serving at Crosslines, Rare Breed and growing our relationship with McGregor Elementary.

When I finished the conversation, I thought, I need to share this with you all. You are The Downtown Church and you are creating the bridge that brings Christ to the community and the community to Christ. Together, we are making our small part of the world a more just place. Is there more to do? Always. But for a moment I invite you to pause and recognize the good God is doing through you. And I am grateful.

Blessings,
Lori

Pastor Lori will be leading a Next Steps Class on Sunday, June 26, from 11:30am-1:30pm. This class is your chance to ask questions about our history, our vision, and the United Methodist Church. And if you are interested in membership at The Downtown Church, you can find out about that too! Lunch is provided. Just click this link to RSVP.

It's been so fun bringing our First Friday Art Walk Parties back to the corner of Walnut & Jefferson. Your next chance to join the fun is Friday, July 1, from 6-8pm. We'll have some fun kids activities, live bluegrass music, popcorn, lemonade, and we'll even have some Apple Crisp and Ice Cream. Bring your friends, bring a neighbor, and let's party!

There's nothing better than a summer picnic, let's be honest. The smell from the grill, the homemade food, and the feeling of cold water as someone smashes a water balloon on your back. Our All-Church Picnic is  on Sunday, July 24, from 4-7pm at Phelps Grove Park. The church will supply hamburgers, hot dogs, and condiments. You all bring the rest:

  1. Under 45 - chips, dips, and some soda, tea, or lemonade.
  2. 45-65 - side dishes and salads.
  3. Over 65 - desserts (the really, really good ones!)
