Greetings from The Downtown Church! This is a bi-weekly email with information about events, updates, and other fun things from the leadership of the church.

Richard Rohr writes: “Prayer is not about changing God, but being willing to let God change us”. Sitting and thinking about those words has significantly impacted my prayer life. It has opened me up to understanding more fully the power of prayer. There are certain truths that I hold onto that have grown my prayer life.

  • When I come before the Lord God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, I do so with the understanding of the character of God revealed in Jesus Christ. God is love, mercy, compassion and grace. I can trust in God’s goodness.
  • The throne room of God has been thrown open through Jesus and I am invited to come into God’s presence. It is in this space I discover God has always been waiting, leaning in, listening. If I have no words, God by the power of the Holy Spirit will still hear the deepest groaning of my heart.

  • In prayer I am also to wait, lean in, listen. God will speak to  me. Sometimes in silence. Sometimes through Scripture. Sometimes through another human. Sometimes in nature. Not always quickly. But always faithfully for God will honor my desire to align my life with God.

Prayer is a discipline. Prayer is a gift. Prayer is for you and for me.

Starting Sunday, September 11, at 9:15 upstairs in our prayer room, Erin Owens and Heather Blair will be offering a time of one-on-one prayer and intercession for healing or any other life circumstances, for yourself or for others. It will be a time to intentionally bring before the God of Love anything that's weighing your heart down. The Prayer List Ministry we have at The Downtown Church is very important. Yet, sometimes we need to pray with another person face to face.

I am grateful for an additional way this body of Christ will care for one another.

See you Sunday,
Lori

The September First Friday Art Walk Party is HERE! Make plans to kick-off Labor Day weekend with us for popcorn, lemonade, classic cars, and live music from Deja Crew! Oh...and it's Brian's birthday. Don't bring a present, just bring yourself.

One of the best events in Springfield is happening on September 17 & 18. Cider Days is coming back to Walnut Street to kick-off all those wonderful fall feelings. Our friends at DSA need some help to make the event great, so head on over to their volunteer page to signup to make this great downtown event a success!

It's almost time to start our fall session of Dinners Together! Eeeekkkk! We are so excited. (If you don't know what Dinners Together is, here's the scoop. We ask for groups to meet three times over three months for a meal. That's it. No agenda, just eating and chatting and getting to know other people at The Downtown Church. You can see a list here!
