Something happened last week that has never happened before at The Downtown Church. It’s something people said would happen so easily here because of our location. Our church was perfectly situated near lofts and apartment buildings and close to campus, so of course we would be saturated with college kids. But, we haven't been. We've talked, we've plotted, we've hoped and prayed. And, we landed with the idea that there are loads of on-campus ministries that are reaching college students well. We don't need to "compete" with that. Like we do for all ages, we need to create an environment where students would feel welcome. And, if they start to find a home here, then we respond.
Well last Sunday after worship, 10 college students stayed and got lunch with Pastor Lori and Heather. People met each other for the first time. Connections were made. Laughs were had. Phone numbers were shared for a group text. Now, I will be quick to point out that one lunch does not make a ministry. It doesn’t mean we’ve solved the college student conundrum. Still, I’m hopeful.
We have always been a congregation that has embraced a multigenerational approach to church life, we’ve just been missing those ages from 18-24. So I’m hopeful that this is the start of something new. And I look forward to how this group may grow and develop deeper relationships in the coming year. And I also look forward to how this church can become family to the young people in our pews who are finding a home here at The Downtown Church.
See you Sunday, Brian
PS: The Bass Pro Marathon is this Sunday so traffic around the church may be difficult. You can access a map HERE under the "Race Day" section.
