Yesterday, I got to live into what we've been talking about in worship; building relationships and connections to others in our community. When we started dreaming about hosting screenings of the documentary, Join or Die, at The Moxie, I got to know some of the staff.
One of the reasons we wanted to hold the screenings there was because they were a downtown neighbor. I met Joe Dull, the Executive Director, and Shay Rainey, the Theater Manager. We met several times to go over the plans and we got to know each other a little over phone calls, meetings, and emails.
They hit a snag yesterday. Their popcorn machine went down. After the repairman, I was the next call. They wanted to ask if they could borrow our popcorn machine. I didn't even have to think about it. Of course! This is a perfect example of the benefits of improved social capital. They experienced an issue and reached out to someone in their time of need. And because we had a connection, we were able to help out.
Here's to all of us continuing to make new connections and strengthening the old ones.
See you Sunday, Brian
